Fall isn't just about pumpkin spice and cozy sweaters—it's a delightful time for planting some truly wonderful veggies and herbs that thrive in the cooler weather.
The milder temperatures make for perfect growing conditions, reducing stress on both the plants and the gardener (that’s us!).
So let me share with you...
My favorite things to plant in the fall garden.
These plants that not only flourish in cooler weather but also make every meal a little more special:
1. Kale: The king of cool-weather crops! It’s not only a superfood packed with nutrients but also gets sweeter after a frost. Kale is incredibly versatile in the kitchen, perfect for salads, soups, and even chips.
2. Garlic: Planting garlic in the fall is a ritual I look forward to every year. It’s easy to grow and overwinters beautifully, ready to harvest in the spring. Plus, there’s nothing like the aroma of fresh garlic in your dishes.
3. Carrots: There’s something truly delightful about pulling fresh carrots from the soil. They’re sweeter when grown in the cool of fall and are such a treat to add to stews or for snacking right out of the garden.
4. Lettuces: Lettuces have a lot of beautiful varieties like loose leaf, red leaf, butter crunch, romaine, and arugula that can all grow prolifically in the fall. You can enjoy a continuous supply of tender leaves because the more you cut the tender leaves the more they grow!
No need to buy a plastic container of expensive lettuce greens that have been on the grocery store shelf for weeks when you can step outside your door and pick a FRESH salad!
Each of these plants brings something unique to both the table and the garden palette.
